According to the Seoul Central District Court on Monday, some 13,076 people submitted a lawsuit against GS Caltex and its affiliate GS Nextation, demanding compensation of W1 million per person. Groups of several hundred people have filed similar lawsuits against GS Caltex for disclosing personal information -- but this is the first large-scale collective act. ¡°The fact that a mere employee of GS Nextation could access the personal information of customers and publicize it is a clear violation of privacy of information. GS Caltex cannot be free from this responsibility. The company managed the security of its customers¡¯ personal information to such extent that it could be downloaded and stored on a USB memory stick,¡± stated the litigants. Chung, 28, an employee of GS Nextation, Wang, 28, Chung's high-school classmate and alleged accomplice, and Kim, 24, an acquaintance of Wang's are accused of leaking personal information, including the names, resident registration numbers, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of 11,517,125 customers of GS Caltex Bonus Card in July.
