StumbleUpon Facebook Reddit Police: Car salesman stole 33 identities Comments 0 | Recommend 0 Shawn McDonald is charged with fraud and grand theft May 28, 2008 - 8:33 PM Andrew Gant CRESTVIEW - A car salesman and broker routinely assumed his customers' identities and stole more than $20,000 in credit, police say. Shawn Lee McDonald, 31, of Coolwater Lane in Niceville, is charged with grand theft and fraudulent use of personal information. Crestview police say he took more than 30 customers' identities when he worked at Hub City Ford. The investigation started in March after Jim Dohse, a Niceville resident who bought a Chevrolet HHR from McDonald, noticed an influx of credit applications being made in his name. "God almighty," Dohse said Wednesday. "Once I started getting one, two, three, four, bang, bang, bang, I figured he (McDonald) was doing it to a bunch of other people, too." Lawmen agreed Sunday. They listed 32 other victims in McDonald's arrest report and sent him to the Okaloosa County Jail. He later was released on $2,500 bond, a jail official said. Dohse said he subscribes to LifeLock, a service advertised to stop identity theft by notifying users each time a credit application is made in their name. Fraud investigators from seven credit card companies told police McDonald made 73 applications and was issued 20 cards. After the investigation began, police began intercepting McDonald's mail and found five pieces containing credit cards, according to his arrest report. He charged nearly $8,000 at Overstock.com, nearly $7,000 at a Marriott in Fairfield, Calif., and nearly $3,000 toward restitution at the Mobile County, Ala., district attorney's office, according to the report. McDonald also issued $7,000 in courtesy checks to his own Premier Brokers Inc., according to the report. He is listed as the president of that company and used a fraudulent credit card to order business cards for it, police say. McDonald did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. Neither did a manager at Hub City Ford. However, a man who identified himself as a former Hub City employee wrote an e-mail to the Daily News stressing the dealership's honesty. "Unfortunately, this one person will strengthen the ‘perception of deception' by auto sales persons and dealerships," he wrote. McDonald is scheduled to appear in court July 8.
