Rick says, "When they told me I couldn't access my money, I was a wreck. I didn't know what to do." He gets his money from a state program that uses a prepaid debit card account. But that account number was stolen and now has $3,700 in charges from as far away as Mexico. Rick says, "I was devastated. I'm laid off and we have to make our money last from week to week." Rick isn't alone. The same thing happened to Tom McManus. Tom says, "The transactions took place somewhere in Mexico." Tom has been unemployed for nearly a year and says the thieves only left $30 in the account. Tom says, "When you're unemployed for that long, and that's you're only income, it hurts. According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, some 1000 Hoosiers' accounts were compromised. Marc Lotter with Workforce Development says, "The company that is contracted to handle the ATM portion of those cards, there was a security breach of some sort early last year." The state did send out letters at that time and 200 immediately changed cards. They are now looking to see if what happened to Rick and Tom is still part of that breach. Lotter says, "We're working with the providers to get those situations taken care of and to get Hoosiers the benefits they need." As for getting their money back, there is no guarantee. But for now, both men are warning others to watch out. Tom says, "I would suggest making all your transactions at the bank." Rick says, "Check your cards extremely close and keep a close eye on every purchase and Don't use it as a debit card." The state is advising anyone who got one of those letters to get a new card right away.
