An undertaking to keep personal information secure in future has been signed by British Council chief executive Martin Davidson. The undertaking included an agreement to encrypt all portable and mobile devices that are used to store and transmit personal information from now on. Mick Gorrill, assistant information commissioner at the ICO, said: “The British Council proactively reported the breach to the ICO and took immediate remedial action, which demonstrates its understanding of the seriousness of this data loss. "The organisation also agrees to ensure that its policies on the transfer and sharing of personal information on portable devices are clear and compliant with government standards," he said. * Have your say * Send to a friend * Print this * Share * < Previous article * Next article > Tags: * Public-sector * Hardware * Storage * Privacy * Software * Encryption * Security reader comments related articles Richard Thomas Public Sector ICO must inspect private sector, say MPs New powers of inspection should include companies and charities as well as government bodies 20 Mar 2009 Management Data protection watchdog cautions Department of Health Information Commissioner's Office demands better records management 10 Mar 2009 Communications ICO uncovers secret construction worker database Builder blacklist in clear violation of Data Protection Act 06 Mar 2009 Communications Information Commissioner to increase technology staff Privacy watchdog will hire more computer experts "when budgets allow" 04 Mar 2009 Management Data watchdog unhappy with information sharing plan New powers proposed by government are too wide, while spot checks need to be extended to private sector, says ICO 20 Feb 2009 Security Data security breaches increased in last three months Ninety-nine incidents reported since November 2008, says watchdog 09 Feb 2009 Hardware Virgin Media guilty of Data Protection breach Company ordered to encrypt all portable devices 30 Sep 2008 Security Home Office guilty of breaching Data Protection Act Third-party contracts will have specific clauses on encryption in future 26 Jan 2009 Security ICO raps health trust over stolen laptops NHS still not handling patient information securely, says data watchdog 06 Feb 2009 related whitepapers today's top stories Management Global technology job losses exceed 160,000 Latest cuts at Toshiba and Sony Ericsson take total ever higher 17 Apr 2009 Hardware Printer providers promise to bring waste under control Many firms have little idea how much they spend on printing - let alone how to constrain those costs 16 Apr 2009 From The Coalface Your company email address - at your service?
