Metro auditor misplaced juvenile crime victims' account data By MICHAEL CASS • Staff Writer • February 2, 2009 * * * Print this page * E-mail this article * Share + Del.icio.us + Facebook + Digg + Reddit + Newsvine + * What’s this? A Metro auditor misplaced a computer flash drive containing the names of more than 500 juvenile crime victims who receive government funds, potentially exposing their account numbers and balances. The victims addresses, phone numbers and Social Security numbers were not compromised, and banks have been alerted to look out for suspicious activity on the accounts. But each of the victims is a minor, and their names alone are sensitive information that isnt meant for public consumption, Davidson County Juvenile Court Clerk Vic Lineweaver said Monday. Advertisement I dont see how they could have lost it, Lineweaver said. Metros internal auditor, Mark Swann, said the flash drive was last seen on Dec. 19 - almost exactly a year after Metro voters' Social Security numbers could have been compromised by a computer theft - but the auditor who misplaced it didnt tell his bosses until mid-January. Swann said the auditor has not been disciplined because the office didnt have a policy on flash drives at the time. It has one now. I wish it didnt happen, Swann said. We realize the severity of the incident. Contact Michael Cass at 259-8838 or mcass@tennessean.com.
