The information was intended for the city's payroll department but was e-mailed to roughly 2,300 city employees. Steve Reneker, Chief Information Officer for the City of Riverside, confirmed to KABC the messages were sent due to a computer operator's error. Reneker says the data included employees' Social Security numbers and financial information for 401 (k) and other accounts. Story continues below Advertisement The incident occurred July 20th and prompted city officials to shut down the city's e-mail system to block access to in-boxes for about 12 hours. That allowed computer operators to delete the messages. The computer operator responsible for the error apparently did not follow city procedures to encrypt sensitive material. The employee, who has not been identified, was placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated. (Copyright ©2009 KABC-TV/DT.
