No cases of identity theft have been reported, and no financial or credit card data was on the computers, university spokeswoman Jeannine Malmsbury said on Friday. Malmsbury said university police were investigating. They don't know if the computers were misplaced or stolen. sponsor The two computers were placed in storage in May when the Leeds School of Business was moving to a new building. The disappearance was discovered after staff members went to retrieve them during the week of Aug. 28, Malmsbury said. "The Leed School is named for the Leeds family who emphasized social responsibly, so we feel this is part of our social responsibility as well," said Ken Kozar, associate dean of the Leeds School of Business. "They think it's possible they're lost, because the business school faculty and staff had to move out of the building hastily at the end of the spring semester," Malmsbury said. "They think it's possible they got stashed somewhere." Letters were mailed Friday to all 1,370 students whose data was on the computers, Malmsbury said. Lost or stolen computers have plagued a number of government agencies in the past year. CU has beefed up computer security by constructing firewalls and limiting the number of places where personal data is kept. "I think we are somewhat ahead of the pack in this idea of protecting personally identifiable information and that's a big push on the campus right now," said CU chief information officer Bobby Schnabel. The university no longer uses Social Security numbers and has converted all its student records to new identification numbers, but the records on the missing computers had not been changed over, Malmsbury said. "Student ID numbers are safer for school aspects instead of Social Security numbers, so I think it is a better idea," said CU student Devon Barker.
