Random items were stolen from each tenant in the building, ranging from cash, pharmaceuticals and movie passes to DVDs and other easily transportable property. * Concentra notified Aetna on Nov. 3 that among the missing items was a lock-box containing back-up and blank data tape cassettes. Some of the tapes contained data from numerous Concentra health plan clients, including Aetna. * Law enforcement authorities believe that, based on the nature of the crime and the items taken from the six businesses, this was the act of common thieves looking for cash and other property to pawn. There is no indication that data theft was targeted. Data Unlikely To Be Accessed * Concentra believes it to be unlikely that data from the back-up tapes could be successfully accessed due to a complex combination of commercial equipment plus special versions of back-up and database software packages needed to read the data, which is itself in unlabeled formats difficult to understand. These tapes cannot be used on a standard PC. * Concentra consulted a third-party data expert to determine the likelihood of the data being successfully accessed. The expert agreed that the likelihood was low. * Concentra was able to reconstruct the data on the back-up tapes, and on Nov. 10 provided that information to Aetna. Our IT team worked 24/7 conducting forensics on the data to identify the specific Aetna information on the tapes. * Concentra performs medical claim audits, specializing in hospital bill review. We determined that some of the Aetna data included member names, hospital codes and either Social Security numbers or Aetna member ID numbers for approximately 130,000 people. The information also included name and Social Security numbers for approximately 750 medical professionals. Aetna Regrets The Incident and is Notifying Affected Members * Aetna believes the likelihood of anyone successfully accessing or compromising the data to be low. Nonetheless, we regret this incident and we are apologizing to our affected members and providers. We will make every effort to prevent any further harm. * We are directly notifying members and providers whose personal information on the tapes could reasonably be linked back to them. * Additionally, Aetna is arranging for credit monitoring services for affected people to help prevent any potential misuse of the information. Aetna is contacting each affected individual directly with information on how to access this service. Data Security Measures * Each of us at Aetna is mindful that our members trust us with their personal information, and we are vigilant about keeping that information secure. In addition to our own numerous data security safeguards to protect confidential information, which we continually review to minimize risks, Aetna contractually requires its vendors to have stringent security controls and we perform security risk assessments of our vendors to help prevent inappropriate disclosure of personal information. * Unfortunately, in this circumstance, criminals burglarized a multi-tenant office building. Concentra is thoroughly reviewing additional security measures and action steps to help prevent future occurrences and we are working with Concentra to minimize the risk of such an event happening again. email this page Aetna Aetna Aetna Aetna Aetna Aetna Skip Past Footer Links Copyright © Aetna Inc.
