The names, phone numbers and Social Security numbers of about 500 employees were taken, the district said Thursday. District officials said that they believe a malicious program, designed to evade security and steal data, was transmitted to a computer in the district's benefits department by an outside source. "Someone had to purposefully target that specific application and it could all the way from something very simple like a spreadsheet to high-end accounting type software," David Setzer of MailProtector.net told WYFF News 4's Tim Waller Setzer said the problem for the school district is determining where the attack came from, which could have been from anywhere in the world. Employees have been told to check their credit reports for unusual activity. That's a critically important thing to do, Setzer said, since data is generally stolen for only one reason. "There is a market out there for identifiable information and for personal information," Setzer said. "There's price lists, there's a market for credit cards, there's a price list for Social Security numbers. It's a somewhat organized and developed underground economy."
