Estimated Costs

Ponemon Institute Direct Costs Estimate 1 $1,200.00
  1. Note that these estimates are based on the Ponemon Institute's 2009 direct costs figures from their 2009 Annual Study: Cost of a Data Breach. We multiply $60.00 by the number of records to obtain this figure. Keep in mind that depending on the breach, the direct costs are not always suffered by the breached organizations. In the case of credit card number breaches, the direct costs can often be suffered by banks and card issuers. Also note that this is only an estimate.

H&R Block Winona, Minnesota, has a serious problem with a data breach. Ask Kelly Pearson, District Manager, about the terminated office manager she fired on May 1, 2009, for illegal disclosure of financial data. The terminated office manager, Becky Erdmann, is now a franchise owner of the very office she was terminated from. Watch out because your privacy is at risk at H&R Block.

H&R Block Winona Mall in Winona Minnesota is now owned by a five-person partnership called "Tax Smart LLC of Winona". The five partners are Craig Zeches, Sal Farner-Woxland, Sarah Beall, Larry Bartelson, and Becky Erdmann. Becky Erdmann was terminated by district manager Kelly Pearson and human resource field manager Jeff Rigler for a serious data breach of client information on May 1, 2009. H&R Block has now put all client data in jeopardy by allowing Becky Erdmann back into the company as part of Tax Smart LLC of Winona. On November 24, 2009, Kelly Pearson along with Mike Duncan welcomed Becky Edrmann back into the company with full knowledge that she was terminated for illegal disclosure of confidential client tax information.

Steve Carlton, the Human Resource Field Manager for H&R Block who works out of LeMont, Illinois, did not find it necessary to terminate Becky Erdmann's franchisee status after it was brought to his attention that Ms. Erdmann slipped back into the company under the cover of "Tax Smart LLC of Winona". Mr. Carlton also does not believe that H&R Block had any obligation to notify the public about the data breach for which Ms. Erdmann was terminated on May 1, 2009. H&R Block just won't take any responsibility for putting the public at risk of further illegal data disclosures in Winona, Minnesota, area.
