COSTS SUMMARY

Known Actual Costs

No known costs for this incident.

Estimated Costs

Ponemon Institute Direct Costs Estimate 1 $28,200,000.00
  1. Note that these estimates are based on the Ponemon Institute's 2009 direct costs figures from their 2009 Annual Study: Cost of a Data Breach. We multiply $60.00 by the number of records to obtain this figure. Keep in mind that depending on the breach, the direct costs are not always suffered by the breached organizations. In the case of credit card number breaches, the direct costs can often be suffered by banks and card issuers. Also note that this is only an estimate.

This incident was not limited to just persons with pending applications. I received a letter from Anthem stating that my data may have been compromised in this incident. However, my application was far from "pending" - it had been rejected on 3/16/2009. Obviously, they are storing data that they could have purged.

There are plenty of articles about this "Incident", but I haven't seen anything on what we are supposed to do about it. Mine was one that was stolen and someone tried to use my credit card - twice! So I had to cancel the credit card. Then I got a notice from BC/BS saying they were going to cancel my insurance due to non payment because my credit card was no good!!!

My information was among the information that was stolen. My application was rejected as well. They send a letter saying their sorry for any inconvenience. Really? Here's a thought - be a little more careful with other peoples information and if an application has been rejected then lose that information. Idiots.
