COSTS SUMMARY

Known Actual Costs

No known costs for this incident.

Estimated Costs

Ponemon Institute Direct Costs Estimate 1 $3,120,000.00
  1. Note that these estimates are based on the Ponemon Institute's 2009 direct costs figures from their 2009 Annual Study: Cost of a Data Breach. We multiply $60.00 by the number of records to obtain this figure. Keep in mind that depending on the breach, the direct costs are not always suffered by the breached organizations. In the case of credit card number breaches, the direct costs can often be suffered by banks and card issuers. Also note that this is only an estimate.

Eight backup computer tapes containing sensitive personal information on about 52,000 university employees had not been returned as expected by a contractor that routinely makes microfiche backups of such data. The company then discovered that it is highly likely that the tapes were mistakenly left by a courier company hired by the contractor at an intennediate stop. in an area where they were collected as trash and later incinerated. The infonnation was not encrypted.

This one is odd, we have primary sources listing different totals. One says 52000, the other 83000.

Which is correct? The letters were sent on the very same day...

One is for hospital patients (83,000) and the other is for university employees (52,000)
